Rawalpindi, 11 April 2025 — The 10th edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League (HBL PSL X) kicked off with fireworks as defending champions Islamabad United crushed Lahore Qalandars by eight wickets, thanks to a debut performance to remember from West Indies' pace maestro Jason Holder. The match, held at a packed Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, set the tone for what promises to be a thrilling season.
Making his debut in the PSL, Holder made an immediate impact, wreaking havoc with the ball and claiming 4 wickets for just 26 runs, showcasing his world-class experience and accuracy. His fiery spell ensured Lahore were bundled out for a modest 139 in 19.2 overs, despite a valiant 66-run effort from opener Abdullah Shafique.
Put into bat, Lahore Qalandars struggled from the outset, losing wickets at regular intervals. Shafique’s counterattack, including 6 fours and 3 sixes, was the only bright spark in an otherwise underwhelming innings. Sikandar Raza (23) and Daryl Mitchell (13) offered some support, but Islamabad’s bowling unit, led by Holder and captain Shadab Khan (3-25), proved too much to handle.
Chasing 140, United took a measured approach early on, with Colin Munro (59 off 42)* and Salman Ali Agha (41 off 34)* leading the charge after the early loss of Andries Gous (4). Munro's elegant strokeplay and Salman's maturity ensured the chase was sealed with 14 balls to spare, ending at 143/2 in 17.4 overs.
Holder was named Player of the Match, marking an emphatic entrance to the PSL and sending a warning to every batting lineup in the tournament.
With this victory, Islamabad United make a powerful statement as they begin their title defense, while Lahore Qalandars will look to regroup and bounce back stronger in their next outing.
