Sehar Khan Advocates for Socially Impactful Dramas Over Commercial Ratings

Sehar Khan believes Pakistani dramas should address social issues to reshape societal perspectives, rather than solely chasing commercial success.

Pakistani actor Sehar Khan has taken a firm stance on the role of television dramas in influencing society. Following her powerful performance in HUM TV’s hit drama Tan Mann Neel o Neel, she emphasized the need for storytelling that goes beyond entertainment and actively engages with pressing social issues.

The drama, penned by Mustafa Afridi and directed by Saife Hassan, tackled the deeply troubling issue of false blasphemy accusations and mob violence—a reality that has claimed countless lives in Pakistan. Produced by Sultana Siddiqui, the series’ finale was lauded for its unflinching portrayal of mob violence, shedding light on the harsh realities of wrongful accusations and the devastating consequences they bring.

A Transformative Experience for Sehar Khan

At a recent Iftar reception hosted by HUM TV, the show's lead actress, Sehar Khan, reflected on her experience working on the project. She revealed that prior to this drama, she considered her profession as “not very serious”, but the impact of Tan Mann Neel o Neel changed her perspective entirely.

The event moderator acknowledged the depth of Khan’s performance, suggesting that the project had given her “10 years’ worth of work experience” in a single show. Sehar enthusiastically agreed, adding that working under the direction of Saife Hassan and with an acclaimed team had been an enriching and eye-opening experience.

"Commercial Ratings Are Not Everything"

The Ishq Di Chashni actress strongly criticized the ratings-driven culture of the Pakistani drama industry, calling for a shift towards meaningful storytelling.

“It’s upsetting that projects are made with the sole intention of gaining high ratings. Showmakers want to cast actors who bring in numbers, but that mindset needs to change. Commercial ratings are not everything.”

Her comments resonated with the audience, drawing applause from those present at the event. She urged producers and directors to prioritize social change over commercial success, advocating for stories that educate, inspire, and challenge societal norms.

An Emotional Connection with the Audience

Speaking about the impact of Tan Mann Neel o Neel, Khan shared deeply moving encounters with viewers who related to the show’s subject matter.

“After this project, people would hug me and cry. In the past, they would simply tell me they liked my work or found me funny. But this time, they shared their own heartbreaking stories. It gave me goosebumps.”

She emphasized that the drama shed light on families that have been torn apart due to false allegations, making it more than just a television series—it became a conversation starter for an issue that is often brushed under the rug.

Sehar Khan’s Career and Advocacy

Sehar Khan has made a name for herself through a variety of roles, spanning from lighthearted romantic comedies like Fairy Tale and Ishq Di Chashni, to intense and emotional dramas such as Fasiq, Rang Mahal, and Jafaa—which explored themes of domestic abuse.

She has also appeared in Naqab Zan, Dikhawa, Zakham, and Mushk, proving her versatility as an actor willing to take on both entertaining and socially relevant roles.

With her strong stance on socially responsible storytelling, Sehar Khan is emerging as a powerful voice in the Pakistani entertainment industry, pushing for narratives that go beyond ratings and entertainment to spark real change.
