Hamilton to Get Extensive Ferrari Running in Coming Weeks

Lewis Hamilton is set to make his Ferrari on-track debut in just two weeks’ time, as the Scuderia adjusts to the new, more restrictive FIA regulations surrounding private testing with older machinery. This marks a pivotal moment as Hamilton transitions to the iconic team ahead of the 2025 season.

Adapting to New Regulations

Formula 1’s sporting regulations now limit teams to a maximum of 1000 kilometres of Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) per calendar year, spread over four days. This change comes after Max Verstappen tested Red Bull’s 2022 car at Imola last year.

To maximize Hamilton’s acclimatization, Ferrari will use its allotted testing days and distance this month. The maiden run is set to take place at the Italian team’s home Fiorano track on January 20 or 21, weather permitting.

Extensive Testing Schedule

Ferrari will then move to Barcelona later in January, with the Catalan circuit booked for at least four days. This gives the team flexibility to utilize the most favorable three days in case of rain, ensuring they stay within the allowed four days of testing.

A decision is yet to be made on whether Hamilton will drive Ferrari’s SF-23 or its predecessor, the F1-75, during these sessions.

Hamilton’s Integration

Team principal Frederic Vasseur expressed confidence in Hamilton’s ability to adapt quickly to the team, highlighting his vast experience and the rigorous preparation planned.

“We know that we have a lot of procedures to assimilate during this couple of days, but he is experienced enough to do it,” Vasseur said.

“We have the advantage to have the simulator and he will be able to do a race simulation and a qualifying simulation in the simulator, and to be fully prepared with the steering wheel and all the particularities of the car. But I am not worried about this, and it is not the biggest challenge.”

Hamilton’s Perspective

Hamilton shared his thoughts in a LinkedIn post, reflecting on his move to Ferrari and encouraging others to embrace change.

"Moving to Scuderia Ferrari, there's a lot to reflect on,” the seven-time world champion wrote. “To anyone considering their next move in 2025: embrace the change. Whether you're switching industries, learning a new skill, or even just taking on new challenges, remember that reinvention is powerful.”
