Petrol Price Reduced by Rs7.54 in Pakistan, Diesel Gets Slight Hike
By Staff Reporter – August 1, 2025
KARACHI – The Government of Pakistan has slashed the petrol price by Rs7.54 per liter, reducing it from Rs272.15 to Rs264.61, effective August 1, 2025, according to a notification issued by the Finance Division late Thursday night.
In contrast, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been increased by Rs1.48, now priced at Rs285.83 per liter, up from Rs284.35.
“After reviewing global market trends and consulting with OGRA, the new fuel prices have been fixed for the next fortnight,” stated the official release.
Fortnightly Review and Background
Fuel prices in Pakistan are revised every 15 days based on international oil prices, currency exchange rates, and local tax policies, as advised by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA).
The petrol price cut brings relief to consumers facing high living costs, especially after consecutive hikes in June and July that strained household budgets.
Diesel Price Sparks Concerns
While commuters welcomed the petrol reduction, many expressed concern over the diesel hike.
“It’s going to increase transportation costs,” said Ali Raza, a goods transporter from Lahore. “Whatever we save on petrol will be lost on logistics.”
Diesel powers public buses, trucks, and farm equipment, and any increase tends to ripple through the economy, raising prices for goods and food.
Global Tensions Behind Fuel Volatility
July saw rising global oil prices due to a 12-day Iran–Israel conflict, raising fears over the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route.
While Pakistan’s fuel supply remained stable, oil marketing companies were directed to maintain reserves amid global uncertainty.
“We are monitoring the global situation closely,” a senior government official noted. “Our priority is supply stability without burdening consumers.”
Price History: Hikes vs. Today’s Relief
Pakistan saw back-to-back fuel hikes earlier this summer:
-
June 16: Petrol +Rs4.80 | Diesel +Rs7.95
-
July 1: Petrol +Rs8.36 | Diesel +Rs10.39
-
Mid-July: Petrol +Rs5.36 | Diesel +Rs11.37
This is the first drop in petrol prices after nearly two months of increases.
