Mbappe’s Brace Propels Real Madrid to LaLiga Summit with 2-1 Win Over Villarreal
Kylian Mbappe once again proved why he is one of the most lethal forwards in world football as his first-half brace inspired Real Madrid to a 2-1 comeback victory over Villarreal on Saturday.

French Superstar Strikes Twice as Los Blancos Secure Crucial Victory
Kylian Mbappe once again proved why he is one of the most lethal forwards in world football as his first-half brace inspired Real Madrid to a 2-1 comeback victory over Villarreal on Saturday. The win propelled Los Blancos to the top of the LaLiga standings with 60 points, putting them three points clear of second-placed Barcelona.
Despite a grueling Champions League battle against Atletico Madrid just days earlier, Real Madrid showcased their resilience and quality, with Mbappe leading the charge. The French international’s two goals came within six minutes in the first half, turning the game around after Villarreal had taken an early lead through Juan Foyth.
Villarreal’s Early Shock and Madrid’s Swift Response
Playing at the Estadio de la Cerámica, Villarreal made a dream start in front of their home crowd, breaking the deadlock within the first seven minutes.
A well-taken corner kick by Alex Baena caused chaos in the Real Madrid box, as Aurelien Tchouameni inadvertently deflected the ball into the path of Juan Foyth, who made no mistake from close range, slotting the ball past goalkeeper Andriy Lunin to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
However, the early goal only served to ignite Real Madrid’s attacking firepower, as they launched a relentless offensive response.
In the 17th minute, Brahim Diaz’s powerful shot was blocked, and the rebound fell kindly to Mbappe, who reacted instinctively to finish from close range, bringing Madrid back on level terms.
The visitors then completed the turnaround just six minutes later. A well-timed through ball from Lucas Vazquez found Mbappe in full stride, and the Frenchman coolly slotted home his second goal of the night, marking his 20th league goal of the season.
Madrid’s dominance in attack was evident, as they continued to create chances, with Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham linking up well to keep Villarreal’s defense under pressure.
Mbappe Denied Hat-Trick as Madrid See Out the Win
After the break, Real Madrid maintained control of the game, with Mbappe looking for his third goal to seal his hat-trick.
The opportunity arrived in the second half, when Vinicius Jr delivered a precise through ball to the French forward. Mbappe’s clinical finishing was on display yet again as he calmly put the ball into the back of the net. However, his celebrations were cut short as the offside flag was raised, ruling out the goal.
Despite the setback, Real Madrid remained solid defensively, successfully repelling Villarreal’s late attempts to snatch an equalizer. The central defensive pairing of Antonio Rudiger and Nacho Fernandez held firm, while Lunin produced a couple of crucial saves to maintain Madrid’s lead.
At the final whistle, Carlo Ancelotti’s side secured all three points, moving ahead of Barcelona in the LaLiga standings.
Ancelotti’s Take on the Victory & Fixture Congestion
Following the match, Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance, particularly in light of their tight schedule.
“It’s the last time we’ll play a game with less than 72 hours’ rest,” Ancelotti said, referring to Madrid’s intense Champions League quarter-final clash against Atletico Madrid just days prior.
“The players showed great determination and professionalism despite the fatigue. We knew this would be a difficult challenge, but the squad showed character to get the job done.”
LaLiga Title Race Heats Up
With this victory, Real Madrid now sit comfortably at the top of LaLiga on 60 points, three points ahead of Barcelona, who have a game in hand after their match against Osasuna was postponed.
The Catalan giants will have a chance to respond when they face third-placed Atletico Madrid on Sunday, in what promises to be a crucial fixture in the title race.
With Mbappe in red-hot form, Real Madrid look set to continue their charge towards the 2023/24 LaLiga title, but with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid both in pursuit, the battle for Spanish football’s most prestigious trophy is far from over.
