Shahid Kapoor’s much-anticipated cop thriller, Deva, has had a slow start at the box office, collecting ₹5.5 crore on its opening day. Despite decent occupancy in urban centers, the film struggled in mass circuits, failing to match expectations.
Directed by Rosshan Andrews, Deva is a remake of the 2013 Malayalam hit Mumbai Police, with a reworked climax. The film stars Shahid Kapoor alongside Pooja Hegde, with a supporting cast that includes Pavail Gulati, Pravesh Rana, Kubbra Sait, and Manish Wadhwa.
???? Deva Box Office Collection (India Net):
✅ Day 1: ₹5.5 Cr
✅ India Gross: ₹6.6 Cr
In comparison, Varun Dhawan’s Baby John, which released earlier, opened at ₹11.25 crore, despite failing to sustain momentum at the box office.
Critics & Audience Reactions
???? Film critic Taran Adarsh called Deva “engaging in parts” but criticized its "lengthy first half and slow-paced second half." However, he praised Shahid Kapoor’s performance, calling it one of his finest.
???? The film recorded an overall occupancy of 10.24% on Day 1, with night shows performing slightly better at 16.15%.
Will Deva Recover at the Box Office?
With a slow opening, Deva now relies on word-of-mouth and the weekend surge to gain momentum. While Shahid Kapoor’s previous outings in action roles have performed well, this film needs a strong push to avoid an early exit from theaters.
Deva was released on January 31, 2025, in Hindi and is currently playing in cinemas across India.
