Veteran Bollywood actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, known for his iconic portrayal of patriotism in Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai, India’s entertainment capital. His demise was confirmed by Dr. Santosh Shetty of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, who stated that the cinematic icon had been admitted due to age-related health complications.

Kumar had been unwell for some time, his son Kunal Goswami revealed, adding that the actor had faced ongoing health struggles in recent years. Despite his health issues, Manoj Kumar remained a beloved figure in Indian households, with a career spanning over five decades that left an indelible mark on Bollywood.

Born as Harikrishan Goswami in 1937 in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), Kumar’s journey in film began with dreams inspired by legends like Dilip Kumar. His deep-rooted patriotism shaped his cinematic path, leading to some of the most influential films of the 1960s and 1970s, including Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), and Kranti (1981).

These films not only won critical acclaim but also captured the pulse of a newly independent India. With themes of nationalism, social justice, and sacrifice, Kumar was affectionately dubbed “Bharat Kumar” by fans and peers alike.

Throughout his career, Manoj Kumar received numerous accolades, most notably the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honor in Indian cinema.

Condolences and tributes flooded social media following the announcement of his death. Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored his legacy, calling him an "icon of Indian cinema" and praising his role in igniting national pride through film. “Manoj Ji’s works will continue to inspire generations,” PM Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Film personalities like Ashoke Pandit and countless fans expressed grief, remembering his unique ability to merge entertainment with purpose, and art with national identity.

As India mourns the loss of one of its cinematic legends, Manoj Kumar’s contribution to storytelling, patriotism, and culture stands as a monumental chapter in the history of Indian film.
