Murree, a popular hill station in Pakistan, received its first snowfall of the 2024 winter season on Monday, ushering in the chillier months with picturesque scenes and a significant drop in temperature. The snowfall, which blanketed the area in a layer of white, saw the minimum temperature dip to minus one degree Celsius, while the maximum temperature reached eight degrees Celsius.
The snowfall has sparked excitement among tourists, as Murree becomes a prime destination for winter enthusiasts. With the forecasted surge in tourist traffic, the City Traffic Police has taken proactive measures to manage the expected increase in visitors. Approximately 200 traffic wardens have been deployed across key areas to ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent congestion during peak hours.
To avoid bottlenecks, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) of Murree, Mughees Ahmad Hashmi, announced a set of new traffic regulations. In line with directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the Inspector General of Police, and the Additional Inspector General of Traffic Police, a one-way traffic system will be enforced on key roads, including View Fourth Road, Bank Road, Hall Road, Kuldana Road, and Imtiaz Shaheed Road.
Additionally, certain high-traffic zones, including the areas around Habib Bank, General Post Office (GPO) Chowk, Cecil Hotel, and the stretch from Bank Road to Girls Degree College, will be designated as parking-free zones to minimize congestion. The aim is to ensure that the influx of tourists doesn’t lead to traffic jams that could hinder the movement of vehicles.
Murree's first snowfall of the season not only marks the start of winter festivities but also reminds visitors to plan ahead for their travel. With comprehensive traffic management measures in place, officials are hopeful that the tourist season will run smoothly despite the challenges posed by the winter weather.
As snow continues to fall, the hill station is expected to see an influx of winter tourists looking to enjoy the snowy landscapes. Tourists are urged to follow traffic guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.
