Pakistan Suffers Crushing Defeat in First T20I Against New Zealand
New Zealand has taken an early lead in the five-match T20I series after a dominant nine-wicket victory over Pakistan in the first match at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

New Zealand has taken an early lead in the five-match T20I series after a dominant nine-wicket victory over Pakistan in the first match at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. The visitors endured a batting collapse, setting up their lowest-ever T20I total on New Zealand soil, which the home team chased down with ease in just 10.1 overs.
Pakistan’s Batting Woes: A Nightmare Start
Opting to bat first, Pakistan faced a disastrous start as the top order crumbled under the fiery spell of New Zealand’s fast bowlers. The team found itself in deep trouble at 11-4 within the first five overs, as towering paceman Kyle Jamieson ripped through the batting lineup with the new ball.
Jamieson was in sublime form, finishing with a stunning 3-8 off four overs, removing key batsmen early. His new-ball partner Jacob Duffy later dismantled the tail-end, recording career-best figures of 4-14 in 3.4 overs.
With wickets tumbling at regular intervals, Pakistan never recovered from the collapse. The only resistance came from Khushdil Shah, who top-scored with 32 runs off 30 balls, including three sixes. He put together a 46-run partnership with newly appointed captain Salman Agha (18 runs), but their efforts were not enough to post a competitive total.
Young Jahandad Khan (17 off 17) contributed briefly before the innings ended at 91 all out in 18.4 overs, with eight balls still remaining. This marked Pakistan’s lowest-ever T20I score in New Zealand, with the previous lowest being 101 all out in Wellington in 2016.
New Zealand’s Clinical Chase: A Walk in the Park
Chasing a modest target of 92, New Zealand made light work of Pakistan’s bowling attack. Tim Seifert provided an explosive start, smashing 44 runs off 29 balls, laced with seven boundaries and a six.
Youngster Finn Allen remained unbeaten on 29, while Tim Robinson finished with 18, ensuring the hosts wrapped up the chase in just 10.1 overs with nine wickets in hand.
Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to make any impact, with the only breakthrough coming from Usama Mir, who picked up the lone wicket of Seifert. However, with such a low target, New Zealand’s victory was inevitable.
Kyle Jamieson Shines as Player of the Match
Jamieson’s fiery opening spell proved to be the turning point of the match, setting the tone for New Zealand’s dominant performance. His figures of 3-8 in four overs were instrumental in dismantling Pakistan’s batting order, earning him the Player of the Match award.
Series Outlook & Next Match
With this emphatic win, New Zealand now leads the five-match T20I series 1-0. Pakistan will need a significant turnaround to bounce back and level the series in the second T20I in Dunedin on Tuesday.
Can Pakistan recover from this humiliating loss, or will New Zealand continue their dominance? Fans eagerly await to see how the visitors respond in the upcoming clash.
