Israel Declares National Emergency as Wildfires Threaten Jerusalem
Massive wildfires near Jerusalem have led to a national emergency in Israel, with over 6,000 acres burned, thousands evacuated, and international aid mobilized to combat the blaze.

In a catastrophic turn of events, Israel is battling one of its most severe wildfires in recent history. The blaze, which ignited on April 30 in the Eshtaol Forest near Mesilat Zion, rapidly spread due to high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds, consuming over 6,000 acres of land .

The inferno forced the evacuation of multiple communities and led to the temporary closure of major highways, including Route 1, the main artery between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Dramatic footage captured scenes of residents abandoning vehicles and fleeing on foot as flames approached
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a national emergency, mobilizing over 160 firefighting teams and requesting international assistance. Countries such as Italy, Croatia, and North Macedonia responded by sending firefighting aircraft to aid in containment efforts.
The wildfires coincided with Israel's Memorial Day and Independence Day celebrations, leading to the cancellation of numerous events, including the national ceremony at Mount Herzl .
Investigations into the cause of the fires are ongoing, with authorities considering both natural factors and potential arson. At least 18 individuals have been arrested on suspicion of deliberately igniting fires .
As of May 2, firefighting efforts have managed to contain the majority of the blaze, though hotspots remain. Evacuation orders have been lifted, and major highways have reopened .
