Police Now Consider the Death of Gene Hackman’s Wife ‘Suspicious’ as Investigation Intensifies

In a tragic and unexpected turn of events, the entertainment world mourns the loss of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The couple, along with one of their beloved dogs, were found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home on February 26, 2025. Maintenance workers, upon arriving at the Hackman residence for routine upkeep, discovered the front door ajar. Inside, they found the lifeless body of Betsy Arakawa, 63, in the bathroom, with prescription pills scattered nearby. Her body showed signs of decomposition, indicating she had been deceased for some time. Gene Hackman, 95, was found fully clothed in the mudroom, with sunglasses beside him, suggesting a sudden collapse. A German Shepherd was also found dead in the bathroom, while two other dogs were found alive on the property. 

Initial Investigations and Autopsy Findings

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office reported no signs of forced entry or struggle, and initial autopsy results showed "no external trauma to either individual." Carbon monoxide poisoning was considered a potential cause, especially given the presence of a space heater near Arakawa's body. However, initial inspections by the local fire department did not detect elevated levels of the gas. Toxicology tests have been requested, but results are pending, leaving the exact cause of death undetermined.

Hackman's daughters, Elizabeth and Leslie, along with his granddaughter, Annie, expressed profound grief in a public statement: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman, and his wife, Betsy." The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
