Vatican City, April 22 – The world is mourning the unexpected death of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 on Monday due to a stroke and cardiac arrest, according to the Vatican. As the head of the Roman Catholic Church, he led a transformative but often challenging papacy, known for his efforts to modernize the Church and stand up for the poor and marginalized.

Just weeks ago, Pope Francis had been hospitalized for double pneumonia but had since returned to his Vatican residence, appearing to be on the mend. His sudden passing has deeply shocked followers and leaders across the globe.
Following tradition, cardinals from around the world will gather at the Vatican on Tuesday morning to begin planning the pope's funeral and the transition to a new leader of the 1.4 billion-member Church. One of their first tasks will be to carry out ancient rituals like breaking the pope’s official ring, known as the “Fisherman’s Ring,” and his lead seal — symbols of his authority that must be destroyed to prevent misuse.
In a significant change from tradition, Pope Francis requested to be buried not in St. Peter’s Basilica like most of his predecessors, but in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome — a site he held dear.
Funeral Plans & Who’s Attending
Global figures are expected to attend the funeral, which is likely to take place between Friday and Sunday. Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who had previously disagreed with the Pope over immigration, has announced that he and his wife will attend. Argentina’s President Javier Milei will also travel to Rome to honor his fellow countryman.
The pope’s body may be moved from his private residence to St. Peter’s Basilica by Wednesday morning, allowing the public to say their goodbyes.
What Happens Next? New Pope Soon?
The cardinals’ gathering will also begin preparations for the election of a new pope — an event called a “conclave.” It’s a secretive voting process expected to begin between May 6 and May 11. About 135 cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote, most of whom were appointed by Pope Francis himself. This gives a strong possibility that the next pope will continue his progressive and inclusive path, although no clear successor has emerged.
Remembering Pope Francis
During his papacy, Pope Francis worked hard to reform the Vatican, promote equality, speak out against abuse, and modernize the Catholic Church. However, his forward-thinking views — including his support for the LGBTQ+ community and his push for climate action — often put him at odds with traditionalists.
He made history by rejecting the luxurious Apostolic Palace and instead choosing a modest apartment in the Vatican’s Santa Marta guesthouse. That’s also where his body now rests, as Vatican staff pay their final respects.
Though Pope Francis faced criticism during his reign, he leaves behind a powerful legacy of hope, compassion, and reform.
