New Zealand Triumphs Over South Africa to Secure Spot in Champions Trophy Final

Lahore, March 5, 2025 – New Zealand's cricket team showcased a stellar performance, defeating South Africa by 50 runs in the ICC Champions Trophy semi-final, earning their place in the tournament's final against India.

Ravindra and Williamson's Centuries Set a Formidable Total

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, New Zealand capitalized on favorable batting conditions at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium. Openers Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson delivered exceptional performances, each scoring centuries. Ravindra's 108 off 101 balls and Williamson's 102 off 94 balls formed a crucial 164-run partnership for the second wicket. Their efforts propelled New Zealand to a commanding total of 362-6, the highest in the tournament.

Middle-Order Contributions Amplify the Score

Following the departure of the centurions, middle-order batsmen Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips accelerated the innings. Both narrowly missed half-centuries, scoring 49 runs each, but their aggressive batting in the final overs added 101 runs in the last eight overs, setting a challenging target for South Africa.

South Africa's Response Falls Short Despite Miller's Heroics

In pursuit of 363, South Africa's innings began with promise. Captain Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen formed a 105-run partnership for the second wicket, with Bavuma scoring 56 and van der Dussen 69. However, their dismissals by New Zealand's captain and spinner, Mitchell Santner, shifted the momentum. Santner's impressive bowling figures of 3-43 played a pivotal role in stifling South Africa's chase.

David Miller's unbeaten 100 off 67 balls provided resistance, but with wickets falling at regular intervals and the required run rate climbing, South Africa concluded their innings at 312-9, falling 50 runs short of the target.

Looking Ahead to the Final Against India

New Zealand's victory sets up a thrilling final against India, who defeated Australia in the other semi-final. The final is scheduled for Sunday in Dubai, where New Zealand aims to avenge their group-stage loss to India and clinch the Champions Trophy title.
