Netanyahu praised Musk as a "great friend of Israel" and acknowledged his consistent backing of the Jewish state, particularly following the October 7 massacre. The Israeli leader thanked Musk for his continued support of Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism.

The controversy erupted when Musk made a straight-armed gesture during a speech at the inauguration of the new US president, a move that some observers interpreted as a Nazi salute. Musk had been expressing praise for former President Donald Trump’s ideological stance at the time.
