Altaf Hussain Slams Pakistan's PECA Amendment Bill 2025, Calls It "Naked Dictatorship"

London [UK], January 25 – Altaf Hussain, founder and leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), has strongly denounced the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) Amendment Bill 2025, labeling it a "blatant example of dictatorship" and a direct attack on fundamental freedoms.

In a statement from London, Hussain condemned the legislation, passed by the Pakistan Muslim League (N) government, as a "draconian law" that undermines freedom of expression and silences criticism. "The PECA Amendment Bill is a gross violation of citizens' rights, targeting journalists and ordinary citizens by curbing their ability to speak freely," he said.

Hussain likened the government's actions to martial law, criticizing the suppression of press liberty and freedom of speech. He further alleged that since 2015, his own writings, speeches, and images have been banned from publication and broadcasting, highlighting the long-standing erosion of democratic values.

Calling the bill an "attack on democracy," Hussain stated, "This law is outright hostility toward democratic principles. Journalists who speak the truth are already under fire, and now social media voices are being silenced too."

Hussain emphasized his unwavering support for journalists and pledged to continue advocating for press freedom and freedom of expression.
