Pakistan has reported its 50th case of polio this year, following confirmation of a wild poliovirus (WPV1) infection in a young girl from Tank district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Genetic analysis linked this case to a previous WPV1 detection in the same area in July, making it the second reported case from Tank in 2024.

Polio Cases in Pakistan (2024):

  • Total Cases: 50
  • Balochistan: 24
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 2 (including the latest case from Tank)

Despite progress, Pakistan remains one of the last two countries where polio is endemic. The Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme, operational since 1994 with support from UNICEF and WHO, continues its tireless efforts to eliminate the disease.

Key Strategies to Eradicate Polio:

  1. Intensive Vaccination Drives: Door-to-door campaigns and permanent transit points target vulnerable children across the country.
  2. Surveillance and Detection: Advanced systems are in place to quickly identify and respond to new cases.
  3. Community Engagement: Trust-building efforts involve community-based vaccinators, local influencers, and religious leaders to encourage participation in vaccination programs.

While the battle against polio is ongoing, these measures demonstrate Pakistan's unwavering commitment to achieving a polio-free future.
