Muslims Worldwide Commemorate Laylat al-Miraj: A Night of Spiritual Ascension

Muslims across the globe are preparing to observe Laylat al-Miraj, a profoundly significant night in the Islamic calendar that commemorates the miraculous journey of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to the heavens. This sacred event, occurring on the 27th of Rajab in the Islamic lunar calendar, offers a time for reflection, prayer, and spiritual renewal as the community readies itself for the approaching holy month of Ramadan.

The Journey of Isra and Miraj
Laylat al-Miraj, also known as the "Night of Ascension," honors two extraordinary events in the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): the Isra, his nighttime journey from Mecca to Jerusalem, and the Miraj, his ascension to the heavens from Jerusalem. These events highlight the Prophet's deep connection with Allah and hold a timeless message of faith, devotion, and spiritual elevation for Muslims.

According to Islamic tradition, as documented in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the Prophet was visited by Angel Gabriel one night at the Kaaba in Mecca. Gabriel cleansed the Prophet’s heart with Zam Zam water and brought Buraq, a heavenly creature, to transport him to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. There, the Prophet led prayers with other prophets, marking the unity of divine messages.

During the Miraj, the Prophet ascended through the seven heavens, meeting prophets like Adam, Jesus, Moses, and Abraham. At Sidrat al-Muntaha, the sacred boundary beyond which no being can pass, the Prophet received divine revelations, including the directive for Muslims to perform daily prayers. Initially commanded to pray 50 times a day, the number was reduced to five after the Prophet’s intercession, emphasizing Allah’s mercy and understanding of human capacity.
