In a remarkable feat, Pakistan completed a historic 3-0 whitewash over South Africa in their One-Day International (ODI) series, securing a 36-run victory in the third and final match at The Wanderers on Sunday. This victory marks the first time South Africa has ever been swept in a home ODI series, a crushing blow as the Champions Trophy looms in the near future.
Pakistan’s batting first in a rain-affected match, which was reduced to 47 overs per side, saw them post a daunting total of 308 for nine. Opener Saim Ayub once again stole the spotlight, scoring a scintillating 101 off 94 balls, his second century of the series and his third in just nine ODIs. Ayub’s performance followed a stunning 113* against Zimbabwe and 109 in the series opener. Key contributions also came from Babar Azam (57), Mohammad Rizwan (61), and Salman Agha, whose quick-fire 48 off 33 balls helped Pakistan to a commanding total.
In response, South Africa’s chase faltered against Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack. Heinrich Klaasen showed some resistance with a half-century, but his dismissal in the 29th over marked the turning point, as Shaheen Shah Afridi took the crucial wicket. South Africa’s pursuit fell short, and they were bowled out with five overs to spare, as debutant Corbin Bosch remained unbeaten on 40 off 44 balls.
Saim Ayub not only impressed with the bat but also shone with the ball, taking 1 for 34 in 10 overs. His off-spin and carrom balls played a pivotal role, including the vital wicket of David Miller. Pakistan’s first-ever ODI series whitewash in South Africa will go down in history as a testament to their strong all-round performance.
With this victory, Pakistan sets the stage for the upcoming Test series in Pretoria, where South Africa now faces the challenge of winning at least one match to secure a spot in next year’s World Test Championship final at Lord’s.
