Pakistan's Digital Future: Senate Passes Digital Nation Bill 2025

On Monday, the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom passed the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill 2025, with the bill receiving four votes in favor and two votes against. During the meeting, the committee also engaged in a detailed debate over proposed amendments to Section 7 of the bill, which had been introduced by one of the lawmakers. Initially, four members of the committee expressed their support for the amendments, indicating a potential shift in the bill’s provisions. However, the situation took a turn when Senator Nadeem Bhutto, who had initially backed the proposed changes, decided to retract his vote after voicing concerns and expressing doubts regarding the content and implications of Section 7. As a result of his withdrawal of support, the proposed amendments failed to secure the necessary votes, and the committee chose not to alter Section 7 of the bill. Consequently, the original version of the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill 2025, without the amendments, was officially passed by the committee.
