GWADAR, PAKISTAN: After months of delay due to security reviews, Pakistan's new Gwadar International Airport, funded by China, is officially commencing operations today with an inaugural Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight from Karachi, according to the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA).
A Long-Awaited Milestone
Initially scheduled to open in early 2024, the airport's launch faced multiple postponements, most notably due to a security review prompted by militant attacks in Balochistan in August 2024. Today’s opening is seen as a significant step for Pakistan's infrastructure and economic development.
The $200-million airport is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a cornerstone of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Once fully operational, it will handle both domestic and international flights, accommodating up to 4 million passengers annually and supporting A-380 aircraft, according to the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA).
Opening Ceremony and First Flight
A formal ceremony will mark the airport's opening, attended by senior officials from both federal and provincial governments. The first PIA flight will receive a traditional water salute, a celebratory gesture by the Rescue and Fire Fighting Service (RFFS).
“This modern airport is a symbol of Pakistan-China friendship and a testament to Beijing’s commitment to Pakistan’s development,” said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a previous announcement.
Strategic Significance of Gwadar Airport
The airport is strategically located to enhance connectivity in South Asia, the Middle East, and beyond, and is equipped with facilities such as cold storage, cargo sheds, hotels, shopping malls, and advanced banking services coordinated with the State Bank of Pakistan.
The launch also complements the development of the Gwadar deep-water port, a collaborative venture between Pakistan, Oman, and China, bringing the region closer to becoming a global trade hub.
Future Plans for Connectivity
PIA has planned to increase flights between Karachi and Gwadar to three times a week, with ongoing talks to attract private airlines and international carriers from China, Oman, and the UAE to expand services.
Despite challenges from militant activities in Balochistan, security arrangements have been strengthened to ensure smooth operations. Gwadar’s airport is seen as a catalyst for economic growth, providing a gateway to international markets.
