Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Z-Morh or Sonmarg tunnel, a significant infrastructure project that improves access to contested border zones with China and Pakistan. The 6.4km tunnel, built under a mountain pass that is often blocked by snow for several months each year, is part of a broader effort to enhance connectivity in border areas. This tunnel will provide all-weather access between India-held Kashmir and Ladakh, making the Srinagar-Leh Highway accessible year-round. Modi highlighted that the $313 million project, which took a decade to complete, will greatly improve connectivity in the region.
India’s relations with China have been tense, especially after a deadly border clash in 2020. However, recent diplomatic efforts, including an agreement on border patrols and a meeting between Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, aim to ease tensions. In addition to the Z-Morh tunnel, India is also working on the Zojila tunnel, which is expected to open in 2026, and a $3.9 billion railway line that will connect Kashmir with the rest of India, including the world’s highest Chenab Rail Bridge.
