The China-Europe freight train service, a key project under the Belt and Road Initiative, has reached an extraordinary milestone with the departure of its 100,000th train. On Friday at 10:20 am, train X8083 left Tuanjiecun Station in Chongqing, bound for Duisburg, Germany, marking a historic moment in global trade.
Operated by China State Railway Group, the service has transported more than 11 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of goods, valued at over $420 billion, since its launch in 2011. This achievement highlights the significant role the China-Europe freight train service plays in international commerce.
The service has grown at an unprecedented rate, connecting continents and revolutionizing global trade. In the past seven years, operations have surged nearly tenfold, with the number of trains increasing from 1,702 in 2016 to more than 17,000 in 2023.
