Barbara Bush Endorses Kamala Harris in US Election
Barbara Bush endorses Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, highlighting women's rights and reflecting a rift within the Republican Party.
WASHINGTON: Barbara Bush, daughter of former Republican President George W. Bush, has made headlines by endorsing Democrat Kamala Harris in the closely contested race for the White House. Over the weekend, Barbara joined the Harris campaign in Pennsylvania, one of the critical swing states that could determine the outcome of the election against Republican Donald Trump.
“It was inspiring to join friends and meet voters with the Harris-Walz campaign in Pennsylvania this weekend,” Barbara shared with People magazine. She expressed her hope that Harris would help move the country forward and protect women’s rights, a sentiment that resonates deeply with her ongoing advocacy for reproductive health issues.
Although Barbara identifies as an independent, her family is well-rooted in Republican royalty; her late grandfather, George H.W. Bush, also served as president. This endorsement is particularly noteworthy, especially as a small but influential group of Republicans have begun distancing themselves from Trump’s more extreme views on topics such as abortion, immigration, and democracy.
While George W. Bush has refrained from publicly endorsing a candidate for the 2024 election, he has remained relatively quiet on political matters since leaving office. However, Harris has already garnered support from prominent figures like Dick Cheney and his daughter, Liz Cheney, who have both campaigned alongside her.
Barbara, whose twin sister Jenna works for NBC, has been vocal about her pro-choice stance, previously rallying for Planned Parenthood, a leading organization in reproductive health advocacy. With Trump proudly claiming credit for appointing Supreme Court justices who contributed to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortion has become a pivotal issue in this election. Since that landmark ruling in 2022, at least 20 states have implemented full or partial restrictions on abortion, further intensifying its significance in the upcoming race.
As the election draws closer, Barbara Bush’s endorsement of Kamala Harris highlights the growing divide within the Republican Party and underscores the critical role women’s rights will play in the electoral decisions of many Americans.
