Internet service providers and software houses in Pakistan are raising concerns over the government's decision to ban unregistered Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) by the end of November. They warn that this move could pose an "existential threat" to industries and individuals relying on VPNs for critical activities such as IT exports, secure financial transactions, and academic research.

Shahzad Arshad, chairman of the Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (Wispap), highlighted the risks of blanket VPN restrictions. He acknowledged potential misuse but stressed that VPNs are vital for ensuring privacy, secure communications, and access to essential online services.

The government justifies the ban citing terrorism prevention and ethical concerns, such as misuse by terrorists and access to restricted content. However, the tech community argues that this sweeping measure could severely impact businesses, professionals, and legitimate VPN users, leading to significant economic and operational setbacks.
