SMOG ALERT, LHC Demands Lasting Solution
The Lahore High Court calls for a long-term, 10-year policy to combat smog in Punjab, urging improvements in transportation, industrial relocation, and public behavior to tackle pollution.
The Lahore High Court has stressed the importance of a comprehensive, long-term strategy to address the ongoing smog crisis in Punjab. Justice Shahid Karim called for a 10-year policy to effectively combat the issue, acknowledging that while the current government has shown improvement compared to previous administrations, more actions are required.
The court pointed out several key areas that need attention:
- Transport Sector: The transport sector is responsible for 70-80% of pollution, mainly due to the use of smuggled low-quality fuel.
- Industrial Relocation: The possibility of relocating industries within Lahore was discussed, citing the example of Beijing’s successful efforts.
- Wedding Restrictions: A proposal to limit weddings to one event and enforce a one-dish policy.
- Construction Projects: The court suggested halting major construction projects in Lahore to help control pollution levels.
- School Buses: Addressing the issue of school buses could significantly reduce pollution in the city.
The Advocate General for Punjab informed the court that a policy to combat smog has already been drafted, and the necessary budget has been allocated. There are also plans to request citizens to avoid holding weddings between October and December, starting next year.
To effectively address smog, it is important to understand its root causes, such as agricultural burning, industrial emissions, vehicular pollution, and construction activities. By adopting measures like reducing the use of fossil fuels, promoting public transportation, and improving waste disposal, we can work towards a cleaner, smog-free future.
