Chinese Firm Wins Rs120bn Road Project, But Bidding Process Sparks Controversy

Islamabad – Chinese construction company Ningxia Communication Construction (NXCC) has secured all four bids for the massive Rs120 billion Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Tranche-III corridor project, the National Highway Authority (NHA) confirmed on Thursday.

However, the bidding process has come under scrutiny as several disgruntled bidders plan to challenge the results in court, citing procedural concerns.

Concerns Over the Bidding Process

The controversy stems from the NHA opening bids without addressing grievances submitted to the Grievances Redressal Cell (GRC). Complainants argue that the process was rushed, with bids being opened just two working days after the original bidding schedule was canceled, leaving minimal time for review.

Despite the objections, an NHA spokesperson confirmed NXCC’s win, but legal challenges could lead to delays in the project’s implementation.

What’s Next for the CAREC Corridor?

The CAREC Tranche-III corridor project is a key infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and boosting economic cooperation between Pakistan and Central Asia. With legal disputes looming, it remains to be seen whether the project will proceed as scheduled or face potential setbacks.
