The case centers on the Al-Qadir Trust, a charitable organization established by the former premier and his wife in 2018. Authorities allege the trust was used as a front to secure valuable land as a bribe from Malik Riaz Hussain, a prominent real estate tycoon. All three—Khan, Bushra Bibi, and Hussain—have denied the allegations.
Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), criticized the court's decision, describing the charges as baseless. “All evidence and witness testimonies confirm there has been no mismanagement or wrongdoing,” PTI said in a statement, adding that the case lacks credibility.
The allegations stem from a 2019 incident when £190 million repatriated to Pakistan by the UK government was allegedly misappropriated. Khan’s government is accused of using these funds to cover fines imposed on Hussain instead of depositing them into the national treasury.
Khan, who has been incarcerated since August 2023 and faces numerous legal cases, has called the charges politically motivated. He has accused his political rivals, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and the military establishment of orchestrating his legal troubles. Both Sharif and the military deny these claims.
