The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, has approved a comprehensive action plan aimed at restoring peace and security in the Kurram district. The plan includes a series of critical measures to address rising tensions and ensure the safety of residents.

Key Measures Approved

  1. Establishment of 65 Checkpoints: The KP government has decided to set up 65 security checkpoints throughout Kurram district to strengthen the security apparatus and monitor suspicious activities.
  2. Banning Hate Speech: The government has approved a ban on individuals and groups involved in spreading hate speech, which has been a contributing factor to sectarian violence in the region.
  3. Deployment of FC Platoons: To enhance law enforcement, Frontier Constabulary (FC) platoons will be deployed across the district, ensuring better control over security and operations.
  4. Demolition of Bunkers: The cabinet has also authorized the demolition of bunkers used by militants and other groups engaged in violent activities.

Efforts to De-escalate Tensions

  • A jirga (tribal council) of local elders will work on peace-building efforts, aiming to de-escalate tensions and foster harmony between the different communities.
  • Incentives for Victims: The government has approved a compensation package worth Rs 380 million for victims of recent violence, including those impacted by sectarian attacks and security forces' martyrs. Additional funds will be provided if necessary.

Other Key Measures

  1. Medicine Airlift: In response to shortages of essential medicines, the government will arrange for an airlift of supplies to meet local healthcare needs.
  2. High-Level Monitoring Committee: A monitoring committee has been formed to oversee the implementation of the action plan and ensure its effectiveness.
  3. Judiciary Expansion: To strengthen the judiciary in the region, 10 new judge posts will be created for the Peshawar High Court.
  4. Air Force Agreement Extension: The cabinet also approved the extension of an agreement with the Pakistan Air Force for helicopter services, ensuring better mobility for security operations.

The government's efforts are focused on restoring law and order, providing necessary support to victims, and promoting peace in a region that has faced ongoing security challenges.
