Preparations are in full swing for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the first global cricket tournament to be hosted in Pakistan in 28 years. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reassured fans and players about the venues’ readiness as Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi stadiums near completion.
A Historic Return of Global Cricket to Pakistan
The eight-team, 50-overs tournament is set to begin on February 19, 2025. While it marks a triumphant return of international cricket to Pakistan, political tensions mean India will play all their matches in Dubai instead of Pakistan.
Lahore's iconic Qaddafi Stadium has undergone significant upgrades, including an increase in capacity to 35,000 and the addition of new hospitality areas to enhance the fan experience. PCB’s director of infrastructure, Qazi Jawad, confirmed the renovations are in their final stages and will be completed by the end of January.
Proving Readiness with a Tri-Nation Series
To demonstrate their preparedness, Pakistan will host a tri-nation series featuring New Zealand and South Africa next month in Lahore and Karachi. This series is expected to solidify Pakistan's standing as a capable host for global cricket tournaments after years of being sidelined due to security concerns following the 2009 attack on the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team.
