Japan's Worst Wildfire in Half a Century Leaves Thousands Homeless

In what has been deemed Japan's most devastating wildfire in over fifty years, the city of Ōfunato in Iwate Prefecture has been engulfed in flames since February 26, 2025. The inferno has consumed approximately 2,900 hectares (7,200 acres) of land, resulting in one fatality, the destruction of at least 84 structures, and the evacuation of nearly 4,600 residents.
