A New Chapter in the Ismaili Leadership Following the Passing of Aga Khan IV

Prince Rahim al-Hussaini Aga Khan V has been officially named the 50th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community, following the passing of his father, Prince Karim al-Husseini, Aga Khan IV, on January 16, 2024, in Lisbon, Portugal at the age of 88.

The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) announced the succession on Wednesday, stating that the sealed Will of Aga Khan IV was opened, naming his eldest son, Prince Rahim, as his successor.

"Throughout their 1,400-year history, the Ismailis have been led by a living, hereditary Imam. The Ismailis live in over 35 countries and number approximately 12 to 15 million," the AKDN statement said.

Who is Prince Rahim Aga Khan?

Born on October 12, 1971, Prince Rahim Aga Khan is the eldest son of Aga Khan IV and his first wife, Princess Salimah (formerly Sarah Croker Poole, a British model).

A US-educated leader based in Switzerland, Prince Rahim is deeply involved in global development, serving on the boards of several AKDN agencies and chairing its Environment and Climate Committee.
