On November 24, Rawalpindi witnessed a significant escalation of violence during a PTI-led protest, resulting in 262 police officers injured, including 170 in the Rawalpindi division alone. The protest, initially anticipated to be peaceful, erupted into chaos as demonstrators clashed with law enforcement, pelting stones, launching tear gas canisters, and even opening fire.

Key Details from the Incident:

  • Injuries and Arrests: The RPO Babar Sarfraz confirmed that 170 police officers were injured, with two sustaining gunshot wounds. Overall, 262 officers were reported injured, including senior ranks such as SSPs and DSPs. Remarkably, no injuries were reported among the protestors. In total, 1151 protestors were arrested, including 64 Afghan nationals, many without valid ID documents. Weapons and other hazardous items were recovered during the arrests.
  • Property Damage: Protestors damaged 11 vehicles and were involved in acts of arson and property destruction. The police have registered 32 cases in the region related to these acts.
  • Ongoing Threats: The RPO and other officials stressed that the involvement of a militant wing within the protestors had raised alarm. They pointed out that despite previous months of peace, the incident on November 24 had brought significant disruption and violence.
