Australia is planning to ban children under 16 from using social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube in a move to protect them from online harm. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that this measure is designed to provide parents with peace of mind and tackle the negative effects of social media on young users.

The proposed legislation has garnered bipartisan support, with both the government and opposition backing the initiative. Enforcement would fall under the purview of the eSafety Commissioner, with strict penalties for platforms failing to comply. The plan includes a 12-month implementation period, with exemptions for educational platforms.

However, the proposed age restriction has sparked debate. Over 140 experts in technology and child welfare have signed an open letter opposing the 16-year age limit, describing it as an overly simplistic solution. Critics suggest that educating children on managing online risks would be more effective than a blanket ban. Tasmania, meanwhile, has proposed lowering the age limit to 14.

While the government’s intent is to mitigate social media risks, experts remain divided on the long-term effectiveness of such restrictions.
