KARACHI: In an unprecedented event, a large passenger jet will be transported by road from Karachi to Hyderabad on Thursday, marking a first in Pakistan’s history. Typically, civil aviation aircraft soar through the skies, but this grounded Boeing 737 will undertake a 150-km overland journey—a trip that usually takes about two and a half hours by road, as reported by Geo News.

The aircraft will be transported on a special truck and trolley, with its wings and tail moved separately, and will be reassembled at the Civil Aviation Training Institute (CATI) in Hyderabad for use in firefighter training, sources confirmed.

Transporter Humayun Khalid explained that the aircraft is 110 feet long, weighs 40 tonnes, and has a passenger capacity of 240. Late at night, it was moved from the airport to the Superhighway. To ensure a smooth journey, the Motorway Police stated that the motorway would remain open, with the plane convoy occupying one side of the road under CAA staff and security escort.

This unique event mirrors a recent spectacle in Saudi Arabia, where three Boeing 777s took a 1,000-kilometre road trip across the desert from Jeddah to Riyadh. A similar instance also occurred in Pakistan in the late 1980s, when a jet was transported by road within Karachi and eventually converted into a restaurant near Hassan Square.
