The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has strongly criticized the government's approach to tackling smog in Punjab, calling it ineffective in reducing the high levels of air pollution impacting cities like Lahore and Multan.

Syed Hassan Murtaza, the PPP’s general secretary for Punjab, voiced concerns over the government’s management of the crisis, comparing it to its ineffective handling of political issues. Murtaza cited the case of a three-year-old girl who sought relief from smog-related health issues through the Lahore High Court, questioning the government’s commitment to protecting public health. He criticized temporary measures, like school and motorway closures, as insufficient to resolve the smog problem.

Murtaza also noted the lack of progress in diplomatic efforts to address crop residue burning in neighboring Indian states, which worsens air quality in border areas. He asked about the status of a letter sent to the Indian Punjab chief minister, suggesting a collaborative approach to reduce cross-border smog.

Additionally, Murtaza expressed skepticism about the feasibility of the Punjab government’s artificial rain plans, urging for sustainable, long-term solutions to tackle the worsening air pollution crisis.
